- Earthquake Shakes Eastern Cuba
- Massive Blackout Worsens Crisis
- Millions Without Basic Services
Cuba experienced a tense and uncertain early morning after a strong earthquake struck at the same time as a massive blackout across much of the country, deepening an energy crisis that was already affecting millions of people.
Why it matters: The overlap of a significant earthquake and a nationwide blackout worsens an already critical situation on the island, raising concerns about infrastructure, emergency response, and living conditions.
Magnitude 6 Earthquake Strikes Eastern Cuba at Dawn
Cuba was hit early this morning by a magnitude 6 earthquake, felt in the provinces of Guantánamo and Santiago de Cuba at a particularly sensitive moment for the country.
According to the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), the quake originated at sea and was felt at 12:28 a.m. local time, under already difficult conditions due to the lack of basic services.
The agency reported that the earthquake occurred “at a depth of 20 kilometers, with a magnitude of 6.0, located 37 kilometers southeast of Imías, in Guantánamo province.”

The official CENAIS bulletin confirmed that the tremor not only impacted Guantánamo but was also felt in Santiago de Cuba, demonstrating its regional reach.
This widespread impact has raised concerns about possible damage, although no structural damage or casualties have been reported so far.
Multiple Seismic Events Reported
The main quake was not the only seismic event recorded. The Cuba earthquake and blackout situation included additional tremors reported by different agencies.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported two earthquakes within the same time frame.
According to the agency, there was a 5.8 magnitude quake at 12:28 a.m. at a depth of 11.6 kilometers, followed by another measuring 4.7 just sixteen minutes later at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Meanwhile, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) also confirmed seismic activity in the area, reporting a 5.8 earthquake followed by another measuring 4.1.

The Cuba earthquake coincided with a large-scale energy crisis.
A failure in the National Electric System (SEN), whose causes are still under investigation, left more than nine million people without electricity.
This marks the sixth nationwide blackout in just a year and a half, highlighting the fragility of Cuba’s energy system.
Before this latest total outage, the situation was already critical: in Havana, blackouts of up to 15 hours per day were being recorded, while in other provinces outages could last continuously for up to two days.

A Deepening Crisis Scenario
The Cuba earthquake and blackout not only complicates immediate response efforts but also increases the population’s vulnerability.
Without electricity, phone service, or internet across much of the country, communication and emergency management become even more limited.
What’s next: Authorities will need to assess potential damage from the earthquake and determine the causes of the electrical failure, while the population continues to face an increasingly challenging situation.
